Atrium Academics offers courses throughout the year to help students prepare for future challenges.
Course One
Get Ready for Algebra 1!
Students who would benefit from this course are either about to take Algebra 1, or have already started their Algebra 1 class and would like additional instruction. This course pays particular attention to topics with which I have seen students struggle over the years. As a result, this course is a thoughtful, curated, supportive preparation for Algebra 1. In addition, many students are unfamiliar with the difference in teacher expectations between middle school and high school. I help students prepare for this transition, ensure they have a solid math foundation, and teach them some of the material that is covered in their Algebra 1 course. Homework is assigned to ensure students are practicing the material covered in class. In preparation for high school level math, students learn how to take math notes and organize their course materials. Students will have access to proprietary Atrium Academics teaching videos and materials. After taking this course, students will approach Algebra 1 with confidence and concrete skills.
Students will leave this course with an understanding of the following topics, which includes foundational material:
- Positive and Negative Number Manipulations
- PEMDAS
- Fractions
- Solving Algebraic Equations
- Solving Literal Equations
- Functions – Definition, Notation, Graphing, Word Problems
- Transformations of Functions
- Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
- Exponents
- Absolute Value Equations
What’s Included: Self-paced online course or offered in person
Course Two
Algebra 2 – Video Suite
This Algebra 2 course provides students with all the instruction and information they will ever need about Algebra 2. The purpose of this course is to provide an easily accessible “video encyclopedia” of material that students can reference to complete homework, study for tests, review material they missed in school, and get all their questions answered in one easy place. The structure of this course is based on the Big Ideas Algebra program, so students who are using this textbook can easily go right to the section in which they need help. This way, there is no more time wasted looking for the appropriate YouTube video or watching Big Ideas videos that present material, but do not teach.
With this course, your child has a well lit path to success in Algebra 2.
What’s Included: Self-paced online videos and instructional course packet with lots of practice problems and worked-out solutions.
Course Three
Note Taking and Study Secrets – Grades 9-12
In this course, I teach students how to efficiently take notes in class. I introduce students to the many ways they can take notes in the classroom and at home to learn course material more easily and make it their own. We use real high school subject matter as practice, such as biology, history, and math lectures. This way, students can get “real life” practice taking notes in preparation for school and for college, when they will have to rely on their own notes to succeed.
Students will leave this course with:
- Confidence in their ability to take effective notes in class in the fall
- An understanding of how the human brain learns and how that applies to them
- Several study techniques for all types of subjects
- Knowledge of how to effectively use a planning tool
- Study routines to apply at home
- Techniques for test taking
What’s Included: 1-week course which meets 4 days a week for 2 hours.
