ADHD and Executive Function Coaching

As an ADHD and executive function coach, I work with students who have a normal range IQ, but are unable to reach their full potential in school due to executive function skill weaknesses.

Executive Function

What is Executive Function?

Executive function is the group of cognitive abilities that control skills, such as organization, planning, and time management, that are required for goal-directed behavior. Because school and life are filled with demands for goal-directed behavior, it is essential to help students build these skills as early as possible.

What are Executive Function Challenges?

Students with executive function weaknesses often struggle with keeping track of assignments, planning long-term papers and projects, knowing what to do for homework, organizing work and workspace, keeping track of time, regulating emotions, and more. When a student experiences difficulty with the day-to-day requirements of a class, school can become very frustrating. This can quickly snowball, resulting in students who feel hopeless, have a negative self-image, and are unprepared for college or the workforce. Many students who struggle with executive function are diagnosed with ADHD, or learning disabilities.

How I Can Help

Fortunately, because of advances in neuroscience research, we now know the brain has plasticity and is capable of changing with hard work, lots of repetition, and a growth mindset.

As an executive function coach, I work collaboratively with students to discover what new routines and study habits work best for them, teach them the neuroscience behind how they learn, and help them with self-awareness and emotional coping skills. For students with ADHD, I help them understand their unique and powerful brain wiring and how to work with their strengths and talents in school. Through this supportive endeavor, students emerge from the chaos and regain confidence and control in school, preparing them for life in college and beyond.
