As a parent myself, I have been through the homework struggle with my two sons many times! Why is it that even a parent who is knowledgeable about a subject has difficulty teaching that subject to their own child? This is not because of any failure on the parents’ part or the child’s part. The answer is simply that it’s the child’s natural tendency to grow up and separate from parents. And, arguing with parents over homework is part of this natural process. Sometimes, the way a student is taught a particular subject in school is different than the way their parents learned it and the student needs to do their homework according to the “new way.” Help from a parent can be frustrating for the student in this circumstance.

An academic tutor or coach can not only make school easier for the student, but they can make life easier for the parents by eliminating the homework struggle from daily life. Working with an academic tutor or coach removes the parent from the “study equation,” freeing both parents and children from the homework struggle and providing space for them to enjoy each other again. Students are more likely to learn from a tutor or coach precisely because they are not their parents. In my own experience as an academic coach, I have seen this result repeatedly. With an academic coach, parents can relax and the student gains one more person on their team.
